Why your counter is dark even with the lights on
The shadow problem
If the only light in the room is above and behind you, your body blocks it. Every counter in the kitchen is against a wall, which means you are always standing between the fixture and the work surface. Adding a brighter bulb makes the shadow sharper, not smaller.
The fix is not more ambient light. It is a second layer of light that originates in front of you, below eye level, close to the work.
Four layers, four jobs
A properly lit kitchen runs four independent layers, each on its own dimmable switch leg. Ambient fills the room at 30 to 40 foot-candles. Task puts 70 to 80 foot-candles on the counter. Accent gives the room depth after dark. Decorative is the fixture you actually look at.
Most renovation budgets cut accent first and task second, which is exactly backwards. Task is the layer that changes how it feels to cook.
The most common installation mistake
Under-cabinet strips mounted at the back of the cabinet bottom. It is the easiest place to screw a channel and it is the wrong place. The beam hits the backsplash, bounces, and leaves the front two-thirds of the counter, where the cutting board sits, in relative shadow.
Mount the channel at the front edge of the cabinet bottom, behind a small lip or a shadow-gap detail so the diode line is not visible from a standing position. Aim for 175 to 250 lumens per linear foot of run.
Colour matters as much as quantity
Keep every fixture in the room at the same colour temperature, 2700K or 3000K, and specify CRI 90 or better. Colour rendering is what makes a tomato look like a tomato and raw chicken look like something you can judge by eye. A cheap 80 CRI module saves a small amount and makes every warm material in the room look grey.
